What would you have done?

Saturday was the last day for Stake Volleyball (I was in charge of the whole thing so I had to be there early every weekend to set up and make sure everything went well). I was also glad to cheer and watch my ward play (though it was very painful to watch sometimes, I wanted to play so badly). I am happy to say that our ward took 2nd place in the tournament (though we so could have beat them). After the tournament we did a pot luck lunch for all the teams. It was lots of fun.

The men have also been playing basketball in the afternoons on Saturday right after volleyball is over. This week Seth had two games (normally he only has one game). On top of that they were back to back. Which is nice we don't have to spend our time going back and forth but they were going to be really tired for the second game. Our ward has so many players they have two teams.

Seth's games were right after volleyball was over so I just stayed at the church to watch his games. I had already been there for 5 hours what was two more hours. The first team we played was the other team from our ward. It was not long into that game that the Elder's Quorum President dislocated his pinky and between the Chiropractor and the physical therapist (on Seth's team) they couldn't get it into place. So he and his wife went off to the hospital to have it put back in. That game finished without any other major injuries.

The next game was another story. I was sitting with the other wives talking about what was going on with LOST and giving our own theories and just enjoying having girl talk. None of us were really paying much attention to the game. We would peak up when they would come down to our end of the court and we were watching here and there but not real intently. When suddenly one of our players was rolling on the floor screaming in pain. Ankles are the usual injuries during basketball so my attention went straight to his foot and ankle. They were on the other end of the gym and even from that distance I could tell his foot was not where it was supposed to be. Then I immediately tried to figure out who it was. It was a good friend of ours and I was sitting next to his wife on the stage. I instantly started tapping her on the leg and saying her name for her to go down there. She then realized it was her husband who was screaming in pain. She handed the baby off to someone (I had Mitchell on my lap so he would stay off the court). My next thought was where are her other 3 children. They did not need to see or hear this. Thankfully they were in the nursery room playing with my children. Within a matter of minutes, the ambulance had been called and some oil had been found and a blessing given. With that many priesthood holders around someone had to have some oil somewhere.

After the blessing I went down to talk to my friend (Jenn). I told her I was going to take their kids home with me so they wouldn't have to worry about them while going to the hospital. It took a bit to gather them all up and sneak out a side door so they didn't see their Dad laying on the floor but mostly so they didn't see that his foot was laying sideways at a right angle towards his other foot. From up by his head we couldn't see exactly what had happened. All we knew is it looked awful. Their baby was still nursing but old enough to eat regular food too. After a small debate with her about her taking the baby with them, I refused to let her take him. It would have been way to stressful to be thinking about what to do about her husband while trying to entertain a mobile baby too. So we took their 4 kids along with our 4 kids home. It was quite the crew at our house. They all played well together and we didn't have any problems with kids wanting Mom and Dad or worried about why they were at the hospital. We just told them that Dad hurt his foot and he needed to get it looked at by a doctor. They were fine with that.

We found out after talking with Jenn that it was actually a compound dislocation of his ankle. His tibia had actually broken through the skin and was sticking out of his leg about 2 inches. His foot had basically been torn off that side of his leg. None of the bones were broken. They were able to go in and find all the tendons (muscles that allow movement of the toes) and reattach them to his leg (except for the one to his little toe). That one was torn too badly and they were not able to reattach it. So he will not be able to move his little toe. Which for me I can't really move my little toe now. He doesn't really need it. The also were able to reattach his ligaments as well. Thank goodness for priesthood blessings. Warning! Warning! This is very disturbing! Not for the faint of stomach! Our plans for that day had changed a bit (not much we were going to spend it cleaning the house and getting things ready for the baby but we still have one more Saturday) but we were doing what we needed to be doing. We had them here until about 9:30 p.m. That's when he went into surgery to put everything back together. Some people thought I was nuts for being a week away from having a baby and taking on 4 more kids. I just did what I had to do. What would you have done?

I would have taken them too, I mean what can you do? I might have tried to see if some one else could take a couple, but maybe not. Like you said, you do what has to be done sometimes.

I think sometimes too the older kids just play with your kids and its not as much work as people seem to think it is, (sometimes its less because kids are less likely to fight with their friends then their sibs!). But still I suspect that baby had you hopping.

Good job Sister in Zion!
